My original plan was to do the factory of terror, but I don't think I would be able to get some good observations. So I decided to do my essay on the guys who hang out on the ave, also known at the 'car guys.' Simply for the fact my boyfriend is one of them and so are his friends, which means i have easy access to information, and my work is right near where they hang out so I will be able to access the field site very easily.
Observations:
-As I drive by Taco Bell there are a huge line of cars with all of the owners close by.
-Jettas, Hondas, Neons, Scions.
-Body kits, loud systems, turbos, revving engines, the smell of burnt rubber.
- Mostly 5-speeds
-If you have an automatic, your pretty much shunned.
-They tend to have a lot of run-ins with the cops*
-They tend to have a lot of run-ins with the cops*
What they talk about:
-Racing
-What they are fixing or adding to their car
-Turbos
-How fast their car goes
*Appearance Of 'Car Guys':
-Hoodies
-Hats(sometimes)
-Soon to come:survey about what type of shoes is best for driving
Source Information:
-One group of guys race all the time and have the fastest cars
-The second group races for fun and has mostly stock cars and cars some aftermarket parts

ReplyDeleteI love what you chose for your ethnography! I think the notes you took are very good, and I really think that once its put all together and has some more details its going to come out really nice. It will be pretty entertaining to read, i think! (:
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI like your topic (for ethnography),it sounds very exciting. Like Melinda said after you put all details togheter it's going to be a really nice writing. Try to get a lot of details including descriptions of people, clothing, and dialogues; it can help the reader to make a picture of that subculture.See you! :)

ReplyDeleteA good choice of topic! And you've got a start at getting down some details. I think the ethnography would work well if you described a typical night, including descriptions of specific guys, what they did and said *specifically* (use dialogue). Imagine you were filming them: now try to give yr reader the same sense of following them around one particular night. (That's usually the way an ethnography works best.) As you collect up these details and write this story (including of course ample descriptions of cars and what they do with them), think about what your focus is. What's the main thing you discovered about this subculture that is interesting or surprising? How does it work, what values define these guys? (You've got a start at that with some of yr details, I think.)
